b.     Love is God’s Greatest Command

Rabbi Challenged by Pharisees, Sadduces, and Scribes
37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40)

Last Supper Discourse
“…34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13: 34-35)

15”If you love Me, keep My commandments…” (John 14:15)

Love Lived through Sacrifice (Jesus, Disciples)
16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. (1 John 3:16)

     c.       Faith to Follow Jesus (John 14, Ephesians 2)

     Jesus Prepares Disciples
1“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. (John 14:1)

6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
     (John 14:6)

Disciples Teach Salvation through God Alone
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,not of
works, lest anyone should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

     Review Ephesians 2
  • Do you ever struggle with believing you need to do something to save yourself?

     d.      Counting the Cost

     Read Luke 14:25–33
  • If you choose to obey Jesus’ call to follow, what might it cost you? (Write it down)
  • What might hold you back from following Jesus at this point? Are you willing to let go of these things?
